Lyrics to my chosen song - Leona Lewis - Yesterday

I just can't believe you're gone
Still waiting for morning to come
Wanna see if the sun will rise
Even without you by my side

When we had so much in store
Tell me what it I’m reaching for is
When we're through building memories
I'll hold yesterday in my heart
In my heart

They can take tomorrow and the plans we made
They can take the music that we'll never play
All the broken dreams, take everything
Just take it away but they can never have yesterday
They can take the future that we'll never know
They can take the places that we said we would go
All the broken dreams, take everything
Just take it away but they can never have yesterday

You always used to say
I should be thankful for everyday
Heaven knows what the future holds
Or at least how the story goes
But I never believed them till now

I know I'll see you again, I'm sure
No, it's not selfish to ask for more
One more night, one more day
One more smile on your face
But they can't take yesterday

They can take tomorrow and the plans we made
They can take the music that we'll never play
All the broken dreams, take everything
Just take it away but they can never have yesterday
They can take the future that we'll never know
They can take the places that we said we would go
All the broken dreams, take everything
Just take it away but they can never have yesterday

I thought our days would last forever
But it wasn't our destiny
Coz in my mind we had so much time
But I was so wrong
No, I can't believe that
I can still find the strength in the moments we made
I'm looking back on yesterday

They can take tomorrow and the plans we made
They can take the music that we'll never play
All the broken dreams, take everything
Just take it away but they can never have yesterday
They can take the future that we'll never know
They can take the places that we said we would go
All the broken dreams, take everything
Just take it away but they can never have yesterday

All the broken dreams, take everything
But they can never have yesterday

TASK 3 - Evaluation of my music video...

The genre I have chosen to base my music video on is R&B, because this is the type of music I enjoy listening to and the music videos I like to watch. The song I have chosen is a Leona Lewis song and it’s called “Yesterday”, it’s a slow song and is about a girl who has lost a person very close to her. What the song is saying is that although her loved one has been taken from her the memories and the good times they had shared will always be with her, and how she wishes she could see that person once more but she knows she will see them one day.

My video is going to be telling the story of the song, where the girl has lost her boyfriend, she is grieving for him and remembering the good times that she spent with him, the majority of the actual music video will be “memories” which fits in with the name of the song, and then it will cut back to the girl again. The music video will be slow paced as it is R&B and flow with the rhythm of the music.
All the footage I will use will be my own but I may use found footage to emphasize an accident which is to do with the story for the music video.

The purpose of this music video is to tell the story of this song because it is a song I think that most people can relate to, as it is about someone loosing someone close to them and that although they have taken that special person they cant take away all the memories that they will have with them for the rest of their life and no one can replace this person, and the lyrics are really meaningful and beautiful.

Music video presentation - Alicia Keys “no one”

I have chosen to analyze a music video by Alicia Keys “no one”, the genre of this song is R&B soul. The video consists of four settings in total which all cut back to each other. The characteristics of R&B that are shown in the video is that firstly it starts of slow slowly coming in closer to Alicia Keys lying softly on an arm chair in an empty room her hair beautifully pushed back out of her face singing. There is then the scene where she is singing in a room filled with musical instruments with her playing the piano in that sequence as well. In some of the other scenes, as in most R&B there are various shots of gold “bling” which may emphasize wealth and achievement, this is in the second setting where she is outside playing the piano when it is raining which is quite different to other R&B music videos where the artists don’t usually play any instruments on scene. The shots are also quite slow there is no use of speeded up scenes its all slow paced, which gives the sense of relaxation and peace.

In one of the shots in this video when she sings “no one can get in the way of what I’m feeling”, she puts her hand over her heart for a second, this may emphasize that what she is singing is really coming from what she is feeling inside. She is also putting all her heart and soul into playing the keyboard, as she does in most of her music videos, also as she is singing she is playing the piano which is going to the beat of the music. Also when some of the chorus changes the scene of the music video changes as well.

For example when she is singing and playing the piano the words to that chorus are “when the rain is pouring down…and my heart is hurting…you will always be around yes I know for certain” she is actually singing in the rain, then it will cut to her sitting upright in the armchair that we see in the beginning of the music video. There is also the setting of her singing against a wall in a blue lit night club, she is wearing simple but stylish clothes, and her hair is tied back and put to the side of her shoulder. There are other people in the nightclub but they are not lit, all we see are people dancing in the dark and she is lit up at the back as if she is the only person in the club.

This video relates to most of Alicia Keys’s videos as she writes and produces her own music, she also performs part of the actual music as she mostly plays the piano in the majority of her music videos. There are shots where there are close-ups of her face, her makeup is beautifully done, her skin is golden and her clothes and jewellery are also gold. In the scene where she is in the club, her makeup has a heavier effect, for example she has dark lipstick.

Towards the end of the video where she had been playing the piano outside in the rain, she seems to be a big crowd of people dancing in the rain and her singing in the middle, they appear to be having a lot of fun and seem like they agree with the lyrics she is singing, as if they are celebrating in the street.

This video seems to be more concept based rather then narrative, because the meaning behind "No One" is different from other typical love songs. It tells you that there is "no one" else that can compare to that person that you’re in love with. Other love songs are just about speaking of the “Mr or Mrs right”, dedicating a song like this to your loved one is like a way of telling them how serious you are about the relationship you're in.
The good thing about this song is the word content. It's clean, no vulgarity, no sexual references or connotation or words that would be inappropriate for younger listeners. Most love songs we hear nowadays on the radio and other music videos have inappropriate word content which result in the younger listeners not being able to listen or buy the song without parental consent or guidance.

The history of music video

Early history

Music and moving images have long gone together.
The ‘soundies’ were an early version of music video 3 minute musical films, they were produced in New York, Chicago, and Hollywood between 1940 and 1946, often including short dance sequences. The films were displayed on the
Panoram, a coin-operated film jukebox or machine music, in nightclubs, bars, restaurants, factory lounges, and amusement centers.

1920’s/30’s

With the arrival of the sound films and talkies in 1926, many
musical short films were produced. Vitaphone shorts (1926–30), which were produced by Warner Bros, featured many bands, vocalists and dancers. The series entitled Spooney Melodies was the first true musical video series. The shorts were typically about six minutes in duration, and featured art deco style animations and backgrounds combined with film of the performer singing the song. This series of shorts can also arguably be considered to be the earliest music videos. (wikipedia)

Begginings of mtv

MTV (initialism for Music Television) is an
American cable television network based in New York City and launched on August 1, 1981. The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by on-air hosts known as VJs. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTV)
Artists began to take the need for promo for every release seriously. There was also the changes in technology and a gap in the cable market.

1960’s promos

One of the earliest performance clips in 1960s pop was the promo film made by
The Animals for their breakthrough 1964 hit "House Of The Rising Sun". This high-quality colour clip was filmed in a studio on a specially-built set, it features the group in a lip-synched performance, depicted through an edited sequence of tracking shots, closeups and longshots, as singer Eric Burdon, guitarist Hilton Valentine and bassist Chas Chandler walked around the set in a series of choreographed moves. But it was The Beatles which made everything popular in the 60’s including the music video.
A Hard Day's Night is a 1964
British comedy film written by Alun Owen starring The BeatlesJohn Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr—during the height of Beatlemania. It was directed by Richard Lester and originally released by United Artists. The film was made in the style of a mock documentary, describing a couple of days in the lives of the group.
It was successful both financially and critically; it was rated by
Time magazine as one of the all-time great 100 films (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Hard_Day's_Night_(film))
